THAT WHICH IS HIS

alternate textA previous study of the things and the groups of people that are called OURS, especially in the books of prophets like YeshaYahu, YermeYahu and Yechezkel, revealed that as believers, among other things, we are extremely blessed and privileged to call Yahweh OUR ELOHIM. Of course, the only valid reason why we can call Him OUR ELOHIM, is because He had chosen US to become HIS own possession and part of HIS very own people. This can clearly be seen in the following two verses:

Deut 14:2 For you are a set-apart people to Yahweh your Elohim, and Yahweh has chosen you to be a people for Himself, His treasured possession above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Deut 26:18 And Yahweh has caused you to proclaim today to be His people, a treasured possession, as He has spoken to you, and to guard all His commands.

If we are looking for true stability and assurance in our belief, we should focus more upon the things that are called HIS, than upon the things that are called OURS. Ours is a legacy of fallible people and human characteristics and behaviour that often fall short of the standard that Yahweh has set up for us in Scriptures. What we should embrace and trust upon, more than anything else, are the things that are called HIS. Like his name, his love, his faithfulness, his splendour, his voice, his words, his work, his ways, his lovingkindness, his covenant, his mighty hand, his ordinances, his inheritance, his face, his throne, his power, his set-apartness, his majesty, his strength, his righteousness, his favour and his heart.

Two of the books in Scriptures that most frequently use the word “HIS” to refer to the things that belong to Yahweh, are Devarim (Deuteronomy – 116 times) and Tehillim (Psalms – 426 times). For now, we shall restrict ourselves to the Book of Devarim. While many of the verses in this Book containing the word “his” refer to his commandments, his statutes or his ordinances, it is quite amazing that 13 of these refer to “His Name”. Once again the extreme importance of the Name of our heavenly Father is highlighted. If only we can learn to meditate and focus and trust upon the Name of Yahweh, so many things will fall into place in our lives! What a pity that many believers up to this day are still looking for excuses why they should not honour the revealed Name of the Almighty!

Let us look at some of the verses in the Book of Devarim where reference is made to things and features that are called HIS. What is so special about these things that are called HIS, is that WE are the ones who benefit from those things. One can even dare to say: His is the love and the power and the faithfulness, but ours is the blessing that flow from these things. The more we learn about and focus upon that which is HIS, the more OUR lives will be enriched and fulfilled.

Deut 4:37 “And because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their seed after them, and brought you out of Mitsrayim with His Presence, with His great power (WHAT WILL WE DO WITHOUT THIS IN OUR LIVES?).

Deut 7:7 “Yahweh did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more numerous than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples (WE DO NOT DESERVE ANY OF IT, BUT HE NEVERTHELESS CHOSE TO DO IT).

Deut 11:2 “And you shall know today – for it is not your children who have not known and who have not seen the discipline of Yahweh your Elohim, His greatness, His strong hand and His outstretched arm (HOW CAN WE HAVE OUR DOUBTS WHEN WE HAVE SEEN IT WITH OUR OWN EYES?).

Deut 13:17 “And none of that which is put under the ban is to cling to your hand, so that Yahweh turns from the fierceness of His displeasure (“his burning anger”) and shall show you compassion, love you and increase you, as He swore to your fathers (EVEN HIS DISPLEASURE CAN END UP IN US LEARNING MORE ABOUT HIS COMPASSION AND LOVE).

Deut 28:12 Yahweh opens to you His good treasure (“his good storehouse”), the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. And you shall lend to many nations, but you do not borrow (WHAT A PRIVILEGE TO HAVE CONSTANT ACCESS TO HIS GOOD STOREHOUSE).

Deut 29:20 Yahweh would not forgive him, but rather, the displeasure of Yahweh and His jealousy shall burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book shall settle on him, and Yahweh shall blot out his name from under the heavens (IT IS THIS JEALOUSY THAT WILL ALWAYS ENSURE THAT THE PEOPLE OF YAHWEH REMAIN SET-APART, LOYAL AND OBEDIENT).

Deut 32:11-12 As an eagle stirs up its nest, flutters over its young, He spreads out His wings, taking them up, bearing them on His wings. Yahweh alone led him, and there was no strange mighty one with him (UNDER HIS WINGS WE CAN ALWAYS TAKE REFUGE BECAUSE HIS TRUTH IS A SHIELD AND ARMOUR – PS 91:4).

Deut 32:19 And Yahweh saw, and despised, because of the provocation of His sons and His daughters. (THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE IN THE TANACH WHERE THE PEOPLE OF YAHWEH ARE SPECIFICALLY CALLED “HIS SONS AND HIS DAUGHTERS” – THIS IS HOW HE THINKS OF THEM, EVEN WHEN HE WANTS TO HIDE HIS FACE FROM THEM).

Deut 33:12 Of Binyamin he said, “Let the beloved of Yahweh dwell in safety by Him, shielding him all the day, as he dwells between His shoulders” (THERE IS NO PLACE SAFER, AND NO POSITION CLOSER TO THE FATHER’S HEART, THAN TO DWELL BETWEEN HIS SHOULDERS).

Deu 33:26 “O Yeshurun, there is no one like El, riding the heavens to help you, and on the clouds, in His excellency (“His majesty” – SOMETIMES WE ARE JUST COMPLETELY OUT OF WORDS TO ENABLE US TO DESCRIBE THE GREATNESS AND THE SUPERIORITY OF THE ELOHIM THAT WE MAY CALL “OURS”).
