alternate textLet us look at some of the main features of SHAVUOT
by highlighting each of the seven letters making up
the word S-H-A-V-U-O-T
(A Hebrew word literally meaning “weeks”):

S   Setting aside the Set-apart days of Yahweh

The sanctity of time …

Lev 23:21 And on this same day you shall proclaim a set-apart gathering for yourselves, you do no servile work on it – a law forever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.
Act 2:1 When the Day of the Festival of Shavuot had come, they were all with one mind in one place.

H   Humbling yourself in the light of the greatness of Yahweh’s commandments

“Arrogance” = I’m all that counts. “Humility” = What’s greater than me is what counts.

Lev 23:22 And when you reap the harvest of your land do not completely reap the corners of your field when you reap, and do not gather any gleaning from your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the stranger. I am Yahweh your Elohim.

A   Acknowledging that the One who delivered you, is Yahweh

Introduction to the Ten Words (believed to be given on the Day of Shavuot): I am Yahweh your Elohim, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of slavery.

V   Vowing to be a doer of the Word of Yahweh, and not only a hearer

Ex 19:8 (directly before the actual giving of Torah): All that Yahweh has spoken we shall do!
Ex 24:3 and 24:7 (directly after the giving of Torah): All that Yahweh has spoken, we shall do!
Hebrew: “Kol asher dibber Yahweh na’asseh”

U   Uncovering the mystery that foreigners may join the people of Yahweh

Ruth 1:16 But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you, or to go back from following after you. For wherever you go, I go; and wherever you stop over, I stop over. Your people is my people, and your Elohim is my Elohim. (Ruth and Naomi returned to Israel in the time of the harvest/Shavuot)

Isa 56:6-7 Also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to Yahweh, to serve Him, and to love the Name of Yahweh, to be His servants, all who guard the Sabbath, and not profane it, and are holding onto My covenant – them I shall bring to My set-apart mountain, and let them rejoice in My house of prayer.

Rom 11:25-26 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved …

O   Opposing the myth that speaking in tongues is a sign of spirituality

Act 2:4-6 And they were all filled with the Set-Apart Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance … every man heard them speaking in his own language.

Isa 28:9-11 Whom would He teach knowledge? And whom would He make to understand the message? Those weaned from milk, those taken from the breasts! For it is: command upon command, command upon command, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little. For with a jabbering lip and a foreign tongue He speaks to this people,

T   Testifying to others to save themselves from this crooked generation

Act 2:40 And with many other words he (Kepha) testified, and exhorted them, saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation.
